European nationals
The UK and EU government have shown their support for a transition period following the UK’s departure from the EU in March 2019. It was announced that the ‘implementation period’ will last for around two years, possibly taking it to 2021, however, the EU’s present draft negotiating directive states that the transition period should not last beyond 31 December 2020. During this transition period EU nationals can continue to move freely to the UK but also qualify for permanent residence after the five year residency.
If you are an EU citizen living in the UK, now is the ideal time to act in order to ensure you have the best chance of remaining in the UK after the UK have formally left the EU. Although the government has not specified timeframes the one thing that is clear is that those who live in the UK under freedom of movement rights will be affected. The UK government will want to avoid a flood of applications between now and the exit date from the EU by setting a cut-off date.

Permanent Residence
If you are a European National, you can get permanent Residence if you have lived in the UK for a continuous period of 5 years: as the extended family member of an EEA national and you have held a valid EEA family permit and a residence card throughout. You will be living in the UK first as the family member of an EEA national and then with a retained right of residence.
Residence Card
If you are a European national you do not have to apply for a residence card to prove you can live in the UK unless you are both:
- From outside the EEA (European Economic Area) or Switzerland
- An extended family member of someone from the EEA or Switzerland
You need to apply for the card as a family member of the EEA or Swiss national which would help you re-enter the country more quickly and easily if you travel abroad, show your employers that you are allowed to work in the UK and also help you prove that you have qualified for certain benefits and services.
This card would last for 5 years and would cost you a fixed for each person included in an application. You must also pay a fixed amount to have your biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) taken. You’ll be told how to do this after you’ve applied.
EEA Family Permit
Get a family permit if you want to join your family or partner in the UK and they're from the European Economic Area (EEA) - based on the eligibility and cost . The EEA family permit or visa is valid for six months. The permit allows the holder to enter and leave the UK as many times as he/she needs to. The Family Permit’s holder can take up employment in the UK. Without an EEA family permit, entry into the UK can be refused.
